Book Club Schedule - 1/30/2010 2:00:53 PM

I am not making the schedule. . . just suggesting we get one in the works so we know when to have certain sections read, etc.

Do we have a plan? Can we make a plan?

Is there a question guide to use?

Or will we come up with our own questions?

HELP. . .

Should we have 1 week or 2 to read each section? How fast of a reader is everyone who will participate in the discussion? I had suggested before that we could read sections 1 and 2 together for the first week ( or 2), then section 3, then sections 4 and 5 together. I think the book is a quick read, but maybe people have busier lives than I do and need more time? I think Tamara will be giving alot of input on Sunday. Please, everyone, make suggestions if you've ideas.

I think this thread is a good idea.

Thoughts:

1. I'm not sure most people have books yet.
2. But enough people do that I hate to slow everything down.
3. We can talk about the background/personal connections/assumptions.
4. We need to make a decision on how fast to go. (I can't vote in that because I am a fast reader and have already read the book once).

I'm planning on posting some background today. It should have been yesterday but my dh dragged us out of town for a family day. I'll start with a few questions about the background and subject and we can work out some other things here...hopefully by Wednesday.

OK. I now have multiple copies of the book. And have begun the reading.

I can tell it is going to go fast (the reading that is). And I'm now unsure about discussing it UNTIL I have read it in entirety. For example, just reading your background, Auben, told me stuff I didn't know (about what is going to happen). So. . .

Should we wait until the majority have READ the book to begin the discussion?

Is that dragging this on too long?

Could we say the discussion will begin February 15 (Monday) for example? And by then those who want to have the book finished would probably have a copy in hand and time to do the reading?

I'm just making suggestions here, thinking outloud. What do others think?

And BTW, we are just working out the bugs at this point. Any future books won't have to go through this process as we'll know what we're doing. (Well, at least, kind of know. ) LL

Liveloved,

I'm ok with waiting for Feb. 15 to start discussion. This book is unique in that it doesn't really have chapters, so a discussion will be easier AFTER this particular book is read in it's entirety. So, is that ok with everyone? We'll read the entire book, with discussions beginning 2/15? Those not done reading by then can wait until they're done before looking on the Glass Castle thread. ( That's to avoid plot spoilers. You can look there if spoilers don't bother you.) If you all have other ideas or objections, please post them in this thread.

Oops, I posted on the other thread before I read this one. I don't think I put in anything that will give away the story, but you might not want to read that post, just in case I did. I'll refrain from posting anymore until Feb 15 if that's the general consensus. It's just that I'm a little anxious to get started, this being my first book discussion group and all.

Ditto. Plus me finishing it last week isn't helping matters much. I'll have to reread it again before I send it back to the library, unless I extend it. I'll have to think about that.

Well it appears the discussion has already begun. So that leaves those who haven't acquired or read the book out of the discussion. I'm sorry.

Liveloved,

It's just a general discussion that has begun. Nothing specific to reading particular sections yet has really been discussed. That was for those who have the book and WANT to talk a bit before everyone is done reading. We're all making this "book club" thing up as we go along, because we're all new to it and still learning. No pressure! Also, if no one posts in the "Glass Castle" thread, it gets placed further down in the Books Forum line and may even get archived before discussion starts. Then no one will know where to post when they're done reading. It's not a perfect way to run a book club, but I'm not sure how else to do it on Crosswalk.

I don't think we're trying to have the main discussion yet. I just posted background from the flap and publisher's summary. There is no 'spoiler' information posted (unless you don't read the flap and consider it a spoiler). We should be able to have a general discussion on the background this week until (hopefully) most people have the book and have the first section read.

This should all be much easier with out next book (I, Alex Cross) because we'll know a few weeks ahead of time.

I don't have a book yet either so this is the best we can do to both accomodate people who have the book now and people who don't have the book.

I'm sorry no one's posting to your suggestions. I just threw a bunch out myself. I think people are worried about being selfish (either in starting early or waiting too long).

Should we do a general discussion this week based on the background I gave and then start section 1 next week?

I just thought we were going to try to establish a schedule so that those who hadn't gotten a copy of the book and hadn't read it could be included. So when I observed the discussion taking place, I felt like we weren't being thoughtful of others.

The book group I participate in here allows about a month before the discussion begins/group meets. We try to pick out about six months worth of books so we know what we're doing that far in advance.

Anyway, I know we are just in the learning phase. But there is quite a bit of discussion that has taken place, including things that those who haven't read or gotten very far would not know. So my concern was for them and beginning this process in a respectful manner of others. . . thus the need for a schedule.

I'm not wanting to be down on anyone. I just want us to be careful and thoughtful of others as Jesus would have us be. LL

We are trying to establish a schedule LL. But we're also giving out some 'busy-work' for people who are finished and bored.

I purposely included information so everyone could discuss together...not just the people who have books. The information I posted was common-knowledge information from the publisher's summary (the back flap or Amazon summary). I'm sure some people might be crossing the line a bit (like discussion of mental illness) but so far no one has brought up specific things to ruin it for others.

It is preferable to have a month to get started, but so far I'm not seeing any posts by people who are waiting on books...other than me...and several posts by people who are waiting to start and antzy. Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve this situation? My worry is that we wait for people who have forgotten us and lose the ones who are still on track. I'm very willing to hear some suggestions of how we can make this fair to both groups. I want that too. My best solution was 1 week of waiting for the book and 1 week of general discussion before we started (2 weeks). What is your best solution?

Perhaps my anxiousness in keeping people busy is because I've been involved in Crosswalk book clubs before and they are never a success. If we give people 2 weeks to a month with no posting everyone forgets to come back. I've had Auben-only book clubs that way several times.

I know you want things fair...I do too...that's why we have this thread. Let's work this out.

Another thing to think about is that maybe our FIRST book will be muddled and people will miss out but if they see they can't get the book they should order I, Alex Cross or Breathless NOW so they we will be all together after The Glass Castle.

I was for the 1 week to order, and 1 week to read until I realised that this is the first month so we weren't completely up to par.

I did check my book out at the library and have to return it by next Wednesday so I'll just have to remember to be careful about that next time.

Perhaps since we know February's book (I, Alex Cross by James Patterson) we can decide that we'll start discussion on the 1st of February and then decide by February 15th the book for March.

The first month is always tricky but I think once we get a system we'll be nicely streamlined.

I am getting the book today from the library\o/. As to schedules I can do whatever. But I have a couple of suggestions to throw out--and if they are not good--well throw them out.

Maybe when the discussion starts it could be posted as pages 1 thru whatever. Then people can post for those pages. Have a time limit for each section. Like 5 days or something then start the next pages.

My thinking on this is that discussion can go on a long time and get bogged down if each part is open ended. But people can read what others had to say and move on to the next.

Maybe at the end there can be a general discussion about the book. If someone missed some part of the discussion they could comment then. It would also be something to do while everyone gets the next book.

This type of book club is brand new to me so maybe none of the above is practical.

Isn't it fun working out all the kinks?

Yes, in the future, once we make a 'plan', things can run more smoothly and everyone will be on the same page. And I certainly know what happens when too much time lags---I forget the details and some of the things I'd wanted to discuss.

So where are we now? Are we saying the discussion is open now? Or are we waiting til a later date and if we wait, what's the date?

And then for March, how can people be prepared?
What is the specific book?
When will the discussion start?

Obviously we need to pick books in greater advance and then have a date set for discussion to begin. So is the Patterson book for March and the Breathless for April? Was The Help next in order of votes? Would that be the May book?

Do we want to begin suggesting new titles and work out a longer plan?

Anyway I'll wait to hear what others say. LL

Liveloved,

Ha, ha! Glad to know you have a good sense of humor. You seem to have a good feel for scheduling. Maybe you could take that part over? If it's ok with everyone, of course. Anyone else interested in the scheduling aspect can work with you on it. Is that good for you? Just make sure you post the schedule both here and in the already started Glass Castle thread. That way people won't miss it.

I like both of your suggestions.

I personally think it would be nice to start the next book March 1 and so on.

According to votes I, Alex Cross and Breathless were tied. I would recommend we just take them in order of suggestion (I, Alex Cross first) since we're planning on reading them both and not have another vote.

If that is the case our next 6 books (in order) would be:

I, Alex Cross (March)
Breathless (April)
The Book Thief (May)
The Help (June)
Atlas Shrugged (July)

Each of those books had 4 or more votes.

I think most people could finish each section in 5 days. I think that's a good number to start with. I do not have a book in front of me (I probably won't get one until March ) so anyone who thinks that is too much for them please speak up.

I think general talk through the end of the week and then starting the first section on Monday? would still give us time to finish before March? What does everyone think about that? And those of us with no books can order I, Alex Cross (I did today) and wait for March or join in when we get our books?

Sounds good. Although, I had to laugh at Cheryl's comment re: me and scheduling. That is not my strong point at all---what you were seeing was not 'the organization queen taking charge' but more like 'the defender of the underdog'. . . KWIM? Anyway, I like the schedule Auben
suggested.

1. Plan on beginning each new book discussion on the first of the month.
So beginning March 1, people should have read I, Alex Cross, and be ready to participate in the discussion.

2. The books for the coming months are as follows:
I, Alex Cross (March)
Breathless (April)
The Book Thief (May)
The Help (June)
Atlas Shrugged (July)

I would also suggest that people keep book suggestions in mind as we proceed and we keep a list of potential books for discussion and vote again in June so that by August 1 we can have a new grouping.

3. Let's enjoy one another and the discussion!

And try and keep the discussion to general thoughts until Monday, the 8th, when discussion of Parts I & II will begin. (That's the first 125 pages. Part I is only a few pages.) Or if everyone has finished by then, we can discuss it all. The book is 288 pages, with part III being 110 pages and Parts IV and V the remaining 53 pages.

It is a pretty quick read IMO.

Does this sound like a plan?

Can we get a list of the authors as well? I'm not sure about the books except for I, Alex Cross and am not quite sure where the thread is that mentions them.
