You don't have to use their exercise plan. I don't.

I did WW last year and for me it's not the plan because of my tendency to start grazing. Snacking is my downfall. There were a few sites though that were very useful.

I love, love, love Sparkpeople! Miss Giggles is right, you don't have to use their exercise or meal plan. You can turn those options off and simply add in your own workout exercises or food. I love that it allows you to add a food's nutritional information if they don't already have it, or you can look up members' additions to see if someone else already added it. I think I've only ever had to add one food on my own.

I like to have a whole grain with my breakfast, which is usually one scrambled egg plus a serving of fruit and my morning coffee. I was toasting a whole wheat english muffin, slice of whole grain bread, or a whole wheat bagel, and then eating half (I usually have a hungry baby or two or four who are more than willing to eat the other half!) but my dearest hubby went to the store last night and brought home whole wheat mini bagels. They are only 110 calories (about the usual for 1/2 a regular sized bagel) and they are so cute! I had one this morning with 1/2 tbsp. of reduced fat strawberry cream cheese. It was so delicious, and a really nice treat. Definitely something to look forward to.

As far as nutrition goes, I really love Weight Watchers, and always recommended them to my personal training clients because I felt that they had a nice, even-keeled, balanced approach to eating. No extremes, and they really advocate making changes you can live with. They emphasize how important it is to take it one step at a time.

I'm not into weighing in at a meeting, though, myself. I also never got into having a female "buddy" system. I found in my years at the health club that when we would do a fitness program that involved meetings and group weight loss, some women could be really catty and jealous of each other's success. It should not be that way, but like Melissa said earlier, some women who had "more to lose" were really aggravated at having to weigh in every week in a room with women who had "less to lose" and would make disparaging comments when a loss was announced from among those smaller women. Vice versa, when a "larger" woman would have a 1-2 lb loss announced, the smaller women wouldn't give them as much vocal support because they figured they still had a long way to go so no reason to get all happy over a small loss (those were actually exact comments made by some of my members). I always found that I spent more time easing hurt feelings in my office after the meetings than I spent on the actual program.

I can tell you this, though. In the years I spent as a personal trainer, I got the priviledge of listening to women of all shapes and sizes, from 400 lbs. to 100 lbs., on their weigh-in and measurement days. From their comments alone, you would never have been able to tell them apart.

I love the CALORIE COUNT free website because their forums are just awesome -- plus I can get a detailed picture of my nutrition. Then again, I'm one of the forum moderators over there -- so I probably spend at least an hour a day on that site, answering questions and explaining things and editing posts. I do like that we can post photos over there and have really fun and detailed profile pages, which is nice. Here's my CC PROFILE page! (My screen name over there is Mollymouser, too!)

A Dieter’s Prayer
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want;
He maketh me to lie down on vinyl-covered gym mats.
He leadeth me to flavored calorie-free waters;
He restoreth my goals.
He diverteth me from the path of midnight snacking for my health's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the alley of the Vendors of Pastry, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me;
My diet and exercises, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me
Spread with veggies and low-fat protein;
Thou steameth my fish in foil,
My resolve runneth over.
Surely, if I follow this living plan all the days of my life,
My hips will be slim forever.
Amen.[/

Now that my wonderful DH has "left the building" for exotic locations elsewhere in service to our fine nation, I've found that I need to do a better job of not over-purchasing and in watching expiration dates so I don't needlessly waste food. I want to be especially careful with dinner proteins, since they seem to be the most expensive food purchases I make these days. I was rummaging around in the fridge this morning and realized that I'd better plan out my dinner proteins for the next week or so -- that way I won't let anything go past its "best by" date. (In the future I think I will keep less perishable items on hand so I don't have to be so date-conscious!)

THU JAN 7 ............. grilled chicken
FRI JAN 8 .............. (dinner out)
SAT JAN 9 .............. grilled beef fajita meat
SUN JAN 10 ........... grilled beef fajita meat
MON JAN 11 .......... tuna
TUE JAN 12 ........... salmon
WED JAN 13 .......... lean sirloin
THU JAN 14 ........... lean sirloin
FRI JAN 15 ............. (dinner out)

In looking at my December Dinner Proteins, I seem to eat chicken 1/3 of the time, lean beef 1/3 of the time ... and "other" for that last 1/3 ~ usually seafood plus one dinner of eggs and maybe one or two other items. (And I try for a nice variety with my seafood: tuna, salmon, shrimp, pollock.) I don't really opt for eggs for dinner more than once a month because I have egg whites every single day for lunch, and then again every single evening for snack -- and I just can't imagine eating eggs (egg whites) more than 60 times in a month, LOL! And, since I eat turkey every day for lunch and then again every evening for snack ~ I avoid turkey for dinner for the same reasons. At some point, it becomes too much of a good thing, ya know?

One added bonus to healthy eating and keeping track of what I'm eating: it's keeping me much more organized and I'm losing less food to waste and spoilage! WOO HOO!

Molly, I checked out the site, but it doesn't really meet my needs, so I'll stick with Sparkpeople.

I'm doing better today. I only ate two pieces of homemade fudge and that's all I plan to eat. Also, I developed a new plan, which focuses on a positive attitude toward healthy eating habits:

A POSITIVE HEALTHY EATING & EXERCISE PLAN FOR 2010

This is my POSITIVE healthy eating plan, which I’m creating for several reasons:

1. To promote healthy eating habits by listing foods that I WANT to eat.
2. To stop the negative, “bad food” connotation by NOT listing foods that I DON’T want to eat anymore.
3. Most of all, to find the right balance of foods that will nourish and energize me, without sacrificing my health.

So here’s my plan:

1. I WANT to eat UNDER 125 TOTAL CARBS a day.

2. I WANT to eat mostly LOW CARB FOODS, which include the following:

Meats: any amount of Beef, Poultry, Fish, Deli Meats, Hot Dogs, Sausage, Bacon, Eggs
Cheeses: All types, up to 3 oz daily. Cottage- ½ cup daily.
Fruit: Any Fruit, one serving a day.
Milk: 3 cups 2% milk a day.
Veggies: Any type of veggies that are low carb, mostly green,, red, and/or leafy types.

3. I WANT to eat ONE TO TWO SERVINGS of a high carb food a day: These include:

Cereal: ½ to 1 measured serving on box.
Potatoes: ½ cup mashed, ½ baked, ½ potato patty, 4 tater tots, 4 French or curley fries
Bread- ½ slice toasted.
Corn: 2 tbsp. or as part of ½ cup serving of mixed veggies.
Winter squash- ¼ cup.
Peas- 2 tbsps, or as part of ½ cup serving of mixed veggies.
Pancakes, or Waffles- 2 piece
Breading on fish, etc- 3 pieces.

4. I WANT to eat ONE SERVING of the following sugar free items a day:

Ice cream--½ cup
Pudding--½ cup or 1 pudding cup
Popsickle-- up to 3 a day.
Pie, cake, dessert: ½ piece.
Cookies: 1 piece.
Candy: 2 pieces.

5. I WANT to drink the following beverages daily: 8 CUPS of water, 4 cups of coffee with a little bit of milk or cream a day, and up to 3 cans/bottles of diet soda a day.

8. I WANT TO eat ¼ serving of a sugary food on SUNDAYS & HOLIDAYS in place of #4.

9. I WANT to eat the following condiments freely in small amounts: butter, Splenda, spices, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, etc.

8. I WANT TO DO CARDIO EXERCISE AT LEAST 10 MINUTES A DAY, 3 DAYS A WEEK.

9. I WANT TO DO STRENGTH TRAINING AT LEAST 10 MINUTES A DAY, 2 DAYS A WEEK.

Now I just need to follow it.

OK .... can I say that it seems to take "forever" to clean, prep and slice six bunches of radishes!?

Oh well ... it's worth it! I eat two cups of sliced radishes every day as part of my snack ... woo hoo! At only 19 calories a cup, radishes are an excellent snack and very diet friendly! Radishes are rich in ascorbic acid, folic acid, and potassium. They are a good source of vitamin B6, riboflavin, magnesium, copper, and calcium. The vitamin C in radishes is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and has been shown to have a positive effect on asthma symptoms because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

They're great roasted, too!

GOT RADISH?

You can say it, and I'll second it as the truth LOL! I love radishes, and would eat them every day, but they really make me burp for the next 24 hours every time I eat them - well, those and green peppers, which are unfortunately, another one of my favorites.

I've never tried them roasted.

I remember seeing a Looney Tunes cartoon when I was a child that showed the "house of the future" and it had a machine that burped all the radishes for you. Of course, I had no idea what that meant back then (I was a tomboy and loved to burp as much as possible) and one day, when I was in my 20s, I was eating radishes and all of a sudden, I realized that I finally understood the cartoon. Getting older has perks.

I wish I could eat egg whites. I could have a much bigger breakfast if I did, because I could eat several egg whites to my one plain ol' lonely egg, but I just can't do it right now. Maybe in a couple of months from now.

YAY for Friday Cheat Days.

Since I restarted this weight loss journey on December 1, I've been taking one day "off" a week where I don't log and I don't count every calorie. It's my night to go out to eat (with my wonderful DH when he's not deployed, and with one of my girlfriends when he is -- like now!) Of course, I will still do my best to make wise choices throughout the day, but it is also a chance for a few splurges here and there. Besides, I've always liked the idea of "calorie cycling" to keep my metabolism from getting .... complacent. Because I still need to watch my carbs even on "cheat days" -- most of my splurges will be low carb.

My breakfast will be the same as usual -- though I am adding one slice of sprouted, organic, flax seed bread (50 calories) from here on ... I need a few more carbs to throw off blood sugar lows ... so my new "ordinary" breakfast will be 363 rather than 313.

My lunch will be the same as usual ... but I'm adding one slice of melted Gouda cheese to my zucchini (90 calories ... yum!) .... and I'm adding two slices of bacon to my turkey sandwich (80 calories ... double yum!) The rest of my lunch will be the same as usual.

My dinner will be at Chevy's Mexican Restaurant. I am going to limit myself to 20 tortilla chips. I will order the carne asada fajitas (onions and peppers) and will substitute a green salad for the rice and beans and I will take my own dressing. (No cheese comes with the fajitas .... I will ignore the sour cream but will probably indulge in the guacamole dollop!) I won't have any tortillas, either -- I'd rather have tortilla chips, anyway. One ounce of tortilla chips = 140 calories (18 carbs) -- and I figure 20 chips is about double that (280 calories = 36 carbs) That doesn't sound too bad, all things considered, does it? My normal dinner is between 620-650 calories or so -- so this seems like a reasonable option for a Mexican restaurant while not totally throwing things off, doesn't it?

My snack will be my usual: hardboiled egg whites, cucumber, 2 cups of radishes, 5 slices of turkey, and 25 Trader Joe's Veggie Sticks.

Harvie, that sounds so healthy, I'm tempted to say it doesn't seem like much of a splurge LOL! I love it!

I think your diet sounds wonderful. I love all the fresh veggies and lean protein.

I'm down another pound, so I'm not going to complain. I'm working hard, and seeing results. That's what it's all about for me.

Way to go, Jenn & Molly! Keep up the good work!

I lost 2 lbs this week, despite all of the cookies and candy I've been eating. I've been doing lots of snow shoving too, so that might make a difference.

Today, my goal is to eat fruit when tempted to eat a sugary snack.

I need help especially with exercise. Just being on this thread will not guarantee that i will do it, but . . . maybe? Other than that, I don't have a plan.

Now I have a question I must ask, and it embarrasses me to ask it. Still . . . .

I let myself get really heavy, so although I have lost weight, I have a BIG stomach. I mean that fat lady kind of stomach. I won't go into detail -- that's enough.

So here's my question: will that go away without surgery? Is there anything that will truly work other than surgery?

(I am seriously tempted to...)

Covaan, yes your belly will go away but you cannot spot train. You need a balanced workout regime that includes cardio and strength training. Overall fitness is what will tackle belly fat. What options for workout do you have available to you, gym, at home, or something else? There are no easy, quick fixes just methodical work that will bear fruit over the long term.

I tried the gym thing a few years ago and it bombed. I have a stationary bike in the basement. I do have some weights down there, too. I refuse to buy anymore large exercise trinkets to dust. What I can do, however, is replace the rubber tubing that I can use for strength training. I also have empty gallon milk bottles.

It's just that right now, the basement is so uninviting, and it's boring down there. I need something to do while exercising, or i will get bored again and quit again. I know it. It's four walls, low ceiling, and a carpet not worthy of a dog house . . . .

I hear ya! I got out voted on where to put my coming stationary bike. I wanted it in the living room. Everyone else voted my bedroom, which is completely dark and very dusty and cold. Dark and cold are great for sleeping, but otherwise I prefer a more warm and well-lit area..... with no dust. I've been getting quite the workout this week just trying to get rid of the dust in there.

OK .... can I say that it seems to take "forever" to clean, prep and slice six bunches of radishes!?

Uh huh!! Do I know that. Recently, I had gone off my diet and left a bag of radishes in the refrigerator for, well, more than a week. I had to eat them quickly, but they were still good (root veggies seem to last longer than most other veggies), so I put them in a container in the refrigerator and have a generous serving with all my salads.

For the past couple of months, I've been on the Transitions plan, which is very healthy, very balanced. It is a combination of healthy diet, regular exercise, and herbal supplements. I've lost some inches, but not really losing weight yet. Others are beginning to see the weight loss. I really like this because of the emphasis on healthy, organic foods. Yes, organic is more expensive, but it's also more nutritious and flavorful, and even though I'm not working, I'm not compromising my health, so I go for organic. I just need to watch the portion sizes so I'm not eating more than I need to.

As for measuring, I'm also pretty bad. But I did measure out how much water is in my glasses so I know how many glasses to drink a day. I also love my Pampered Chef items that provide measurements right in the cups I eat from. For instance, last night, I needed 1/2 cup of black beans, so I got out my measuring cup and ate right from there.

Here's the transitions plan that I follow:

Breakfast:
4-6 oz protein, 2-3 cups vegetables

Lunch:
4-6 oz protein, 2-3 cups vegetables, 1/2 cup low GI carb

Dinner:
4-6 oz protein, 2-3 cups vegetables, 1/2 cup low GI carb, 1 fruit serving

Snack:
2-3 cups vegetables

I also started a food blog about local foods. What I want to accomplish is the ability to find lots of fresh food around my area that is not only good for us, but also supporting local agriculture and getting away from food "manufacturers" (an oxymoron if I ever heard one!! )
