JCPenney has backpacks on sale this week for 50% off. I noticed they have the JanSport brand, which was really popular when I was in school. I remember I had one of their backpacks and it was pretty durable. I wonder if they're still made as well....

Personally I will buy nothing but Crayola or Prang for colored pencils, markers or crayons. They last longer, sharpen better and don't dry out as fast! Thus they don't need to be replaced as often. And they deliver much better color in my opinion! My eldest dd has been using the same Crayola colored pencils for 4 years now. She has a set for school and a set here at home. I didn't buy her new markers either as she has all those from last year.

But that's me. I've worked in the art department of our school long enough to know a lot about a LOT of different brands!

Blessings,

Garsy

My husband just enrolled in college, starting next week. He's so excited and nervous. I said at dinner, "Do you want to run to Office Max and buy some school supplies?" He chuckled. He's doing everything online, so the supplies he needs are a computer and internet access.

I don't know how this would work in real life, but as teachers, we often get together and order as a group from classroomdirect.com. We order lots of paper, the big class packs of markers, etc, and then just split the cost. If you had enough parents to form a good-sized group, going in together might be worth it. And if the order is enough, they often have free shipping. They also have calculators and stuff, and based on some of their other prices, it might be less than Wal Mart or somewhere.

I hope this isn't OT, and I guess this should be more directed at teachers than parents, but is all this stuff really necessary?

I think of the sorts of office supplies that I and the people I know use every day and it barely resembles anything I've seen in the lists on this thread.

Just for a couple examples:
Spiral notebooks & composition journals vs legal-style pads. I'm sorry, but IMO spiral notebooks and composition journals are virtually useless. Spiral notebooks make a huge mess when you tear pages out and the spiral binding make it hard to write close to the edge of the paper (I image its even worse for left-handers). Composition journals are even harder to use, since they don't open very well and IIRC not usually perforated. Legal pads, OTOH are bound at the top so they're easy to write on and have nice perforations so they tear cleanly.

Wooden pencils vs mechanical pencils. Mechanical pencils don't make a mess from sharpening since they're plastic and always sharp.

Having one folder with a zillion pockets vs using some kind of filing cabinet for longer-term storage. How much do kids need to carry back and forth every day?

There are more, but I'm having a brain freeze...

-Dan.

Not at our Walmart - I was just there 4 hours ago.

Crayola crayons $.25 vs. Roseart at $.20
Crayola markers $1.00 vs. Roseart at $.70
I can't remember what the pencils were. Roseart watercolors were also cheaper.

At Target last week, I think Crayola was cheaper, but I think that that was a one week sale.

spiral notebooks come in handy NOT for work that is to be handed in, but for things like journals, note-taking, In 4th grade here the kids use the for science note taking and for writers journals. In 5th grade they use spirals for reading journaling (these get handed in every other week and the teacher writes a little letter back to the kids), writers journals, and for science class.

I've only ever bought one composition book for a school supply, but my eldest daughter prefers these over spiral notebooks. She says they fit better in her backpack and don't get hung up on things.

I will be buying each of my middle schoolers some sort of zippered binder with folders for each class. It works better from an organization stand point.

My eldest will likely use a binder for each class except for things like music theory or his art classes, where a notebook and simple folder should suffice. It's a system that he's been using since 8th grade and it works for him!

Blessings,

Garsy

Walmart and Target has a brand lunch-boxes for sale called Arctic Zone.

Specially marked ones have an offer for 6 months free of Parenting magazine. If you get one of those, you can opt NOT to receive the magazine, but instead get a refund of $4.96. Based on the lunchbox you buy, you can either get a free one or a very cheap one. The offer is limited to one per household. Admittedly, they are not the sturdiest ones ever made, but free is free.

I have my oldest (5th grade) use composition notebooks for journaling and vocabulary words. I like that they don't have wires to get caught on things.

I used spiral notebooks last semester for my math class. They are very easy to tear out neatly IF they also have the perforation past the messy part. Also good for notes. I don't buy any looseleaf paper, either for homeschool or my school. It just gets bent and a mess.

One reason composition/spiral are used is because they both have harder covers. They are less likely to get messed up in a locker or backpack than a legal pad. Also, composition notebooks are almost always used for journaling, so there is no tearing out. We have moved away from spiral bound because of the ripping and wires: kids now get a binder with dividers.

This is sad, but mechanical pencils come with disicipline issues, from "shooting" the lead at people to using them for drugs. Yes, at the jr. high where I taught several years ago, kids were taking out the lead, putting white-out in the pencil, and sniffing it. How creative

And yes, believe it or not, most of the time these things do get used. My DD for example, is a big time writer, so her journaling goes on and on and on.....She flew through the four composition books I bought, and we had to get more.

As I have said before, most teachers labor over the supply lists, trying not to make them any longer than needed. And unfortunately, when tough times hit for everyone, the instructional supply money allotted to teachers usually ends up getting cut.

As a parent, I have moaned about supplies before. It gets pricey, and sometimes you can't get it all at one place. But I am thankful that I am a teacher too because it gives me a unique perspective and prevents me from villainizing "that school".....because I know better.

Spiral notebooks for things you need to keep together. Journals, class notes, etc. Loose-leaf paper in a 3-ring binder for stuff to turn in.

As an adult, I NEVER use legal pads. I hate them. I much prefer a spiral notebook or journal.

I have a couple mechanical pencils that I use, but will use regular wooden pencils too. I prefer pens.

I prefer colored pencils over markers and crayons.

Exactly Christine. When I was in high school, and college, I kept a spiral notebook and a folder for each class. I used the spiral notebook to take notes in and the folder had some loose-leaf paper for things to turn in and papers to keep.

Personally I hate mechanical pencils...the lead keeps breaking. I love wooden pencils for math.

Pentel Twist Erase pencils are the best mechanical pencils ever invented. Even at a 0.05mm lead diameter, I didn't break lead. And I write hard. The erasers were long and so you weren't changing them out every other day. The lead is refilled in a seperate location from the eraser, so replacing the eraser doesn't lose all the lead. I used to get them to last for years. I think I owned a total of 3 for all of high school and maybe about that for all of college. I still have the few that I bought for grad school.

I love school supplies. I love walking down the aisles at Office Max. My mom and I would have fun shopping for school supplies when I was in high school. then I had to start footing the bill .... ouch!

My oldest has to use 3 ring binders for all of her classes in HS. We bought the mid-priced ones last year and had to rebuy midyear. This year I am have to replace two. I am going with the good ones because she can reuse them for the next few years. She does not write on the outside, she just slides the class information into the clear outer covers.

I am the same as Garsy, I do not repurchase supplies. If their crayons, markers, etc are still usable they get reused the following year. They also reuse lunch boxes and backpacks because I have found if you buy a good one they last for more than one year.

DD1 prefers mechanical pencils, so I am going to try the Penel ones that Christsstar recommended. The cheap ones are just a waste of money.

My DH has one of those fancy mechanical pencils and I just tried it out. You're right. It's the only time I haven't broken a lead in one. Now I am coveting his.....maybe his will just mysteriously get lost....in my purse

I have a few tricks for backpacks and such: You can use a magic eraser to get all the scuffs off of a backpack. You can do the outside, then turn it inside out and do the inside too. This also works for lunch packs and thermoses. We have always bought those binders with the clear sleeve on the front, so they can be "magic erased, and a cool "cover" can be made to go in the sleeve using Word or Publisher. My kids used to love to make their own. My DD has had the same messenger bag type backpack for the last three years - it think that style lasts longer than the traditional "on the back" types. Our kids also have school shirts, and as they got older, you could choose the colors. I always stuck with blues, reds, etc. so they could be handed down regardless of gender. I always got my kids a pencil box instead of a pouch - they cost about the same, and the crayons, pencil, etc. weren't as likely to get broken in a hard box.

And for lunches....When things were tight, I found that I could pack a simple lunch more cheaply than school lunch. I would buy ham, cheese, crackers, fruit, go-gurt (worth it to not need a spoon), carrots...and the kids would make their own "lunchables" in sandwich baggies. You can make a week's worth at a time.

Okay, those are all of my cheap ideas.

I just signed up my kids for fall classes at our co-op group and got my list of supplies. They didn't put them in the class descriptions they hand out this year--it was on the sign-up sheet itself. I had to write them all down. I hope I got it all. I'm not terribly thrilled with the way they decided to organize the registration process this time around. They decided to simplify it and made it much more complicated instead. Plus the fees went up (as usual.)

Bic mechanical pencils - .25$ a package of 5 - Limit 2 at Staples today. They also had index cards on sale for a quarter but I had already purchased a bunch of those.

Blessings,

Garsy

There are some 'newer' mechanical pencil leads that are less prone to breakage; that's usually what I get when I buy the leads.

I bought more colored pencils and some regular pencils. I don't think I actually need to buy any more school supplies. All I have left are a couple of curriculum items, one of which I won't even need until probably January. I feel like something is wrong, because I'm ahead of the game this year.

Spring for the good Pentel mechanical pencils. I used them all the way through college (drafting/design/engineering) and STILL have them! The cheapo mechanical pencils are just that...cheapo! Office Depot has the best prices on them.

Staples has free backpacks this week...you get a rebate gift card in the mail in a few weeks so you have to shell out the money. Also the following for 25 cents:

Gel Pens
tiny storage boxes
highlghters

The gel pens are a rebate too

Office max has the following with 100% rewards in the form of a store gift card:

Backpacks
3 ring binders
12 pack of sharpies
gel pens
copy paper
Vinyl cover spiral notebooks: 1 subject, 5 subject, and journal size. College or wide ruled

It was kind of pricey but I know I'll need printer ink this fall...

I'm pretty much done school shopping!!!! Just a few little things that I might pick up between now and the first day of school and then depending upon what surprises Ty's High school teachers throw at us we may have to go back after school starts. But all in all I think we are done!!!

Zipper binders at WalMart were $5 today!

Now that I bought filler paper for $.75 it'll go down in price. That I can assure you.

Regular 3 ring one inch binders - in black only were 4 for $5 too.

Dry erase board markers do it to us every year!!

And I'm not buying overhead markers unless absolutely necessary! Those things are expensive!!

Now to bag it all up in individual bags and have it ready before the first day of school! Thankfully I can bring my 3 younger children's stuff to school in advance and they can stash it in their lockers! Saves them from heavy, full backpacks that first day!

Blessings,

Garsy
