Hello everyone, I know this is a hard time for us all with the economy the way it is. I am a licensed P&C insurance agent in Virginia. I have a job that is part time + commission. It has been very lean here the last few months, and my back is really against the wall. My current company won't agree to full time work, and I am faced with the need to look for full time work some other way. I thought about using a staffing agency to help me find a job. I haven't used one before. I have several years of office experience to my credit, from doing inside sales / CSR work at a mortgage company to being a mortgage loan officer, executive assistant & other clerical jobs. I have great references and I am a hard worker. I now have some insurance experience and would like to put that to work in a full time position. Anyway, what is the best way to seek work through a staffing agency, and how does it work? What are some of the benefits and drawbacks of using one?

there are some good ones and bad ones. Basically you submit your resume to them (or they call you if they find your resume online) You let them know what kind of work you want (part time, full time, temp etc). If they find something you might be a fit for, they'll call you in and you either do all the paperwork or just sign the background check consents, etc. They'll call if you they find anything they think they can get you an interview for. Pros: sometimes you can get hired in or they can place you at another site when the job ends. Cons: Lots of temp / contract jobs (but then to you it might not matter) Lower pay/benefits since the agency is taking a cut of your salary. There are some really rude and aggressive recruiters out there. remember they work on commission. There are also some recruiters who aren't very knowledgeable about the position and it shows.

Staffing agencies are great start to acquiring fulltime employment. Many companies are using services of staffing agencies, because of unsure economy. You often times can start out temporary, but eventually be hired on permanently at company you are working as the assignment. Also, most staffing agencies don't charge you a fee, they get paid through the company they send you to complete your assignment. I enjoy staffing agencies because you can have opportunity to work in variety of areas, which helps you acquire additional skills and qualifications. Also, you can often receive additional benefits such as health insurance, vacation, etc through staffing agency just as regular company. There are many positions available in insurance industry, however sales is kind of lean right now, because people are waiting on status of which direction our current economy is going. You might also consider returning to school to possibly train in another area of expertise to better your opportunities. Check out some of the larger staffing firms and stay away from paying ones. Let me know how it goes! Keep the faith, it is going to get better. I can testify to that!

The above posts are true. You should not have to pay any fees. If they request payment, leave and go to another agency. Be specific about what you want. I suggest telling them that you would prefer Temp to Perm (temporary to permanent) When a company asks for this, it is a trial work offer and if they like your work, you have the opportunity to become a permanent employee. Don't let them push you into something you are not comfortable with. For example if you want to stay in insurance --Fine. Tell them that. Don't let them convince you to take a long term assignment in medical research just because they have an opening today. However, if you are offered a 1 or 2 day assignment in different field and you need the money, That's ok. Be sure to follow the rules you are given. If your time sheet must be faxed by Friday at 3 pm, Make sure you do that. If you have questions or concerns, be sure to communicate them with your contact person at the agency. Working for a staffing agency can be a great experience. I once was sent to a company where the bosses (a married couple) made a fantastic homemade gourmet lunch for all the staff on Fridays.
